NOTES

  • Some languages that conjugate verbs often leave out the pronoun (Italian, Spanish, Polish, Czech Slovak). ('Sono' in Italian is always I am, and there is no need to say 'I'.
  • French, German and Dutch always include the pronouns, even where there would be no doubt as to meaning.
  • sometimes the pronoun is added to avoid ambiguity between identical conjugations in Spanish and Italian.
    • (Lei il signore Smith? Are YOU Mr. Smith?)
    • (Lui il signore Smith? Is HE Mr. Smith?)
  • Spanish has two verbs for being: 'estar' (temporary, passing state) and 'ser' (permanent states)
    • es linda (she is beautiful) / está linda (she's looking lovely)
    • however, geographical location always uses 'estar' even when permanent
      Paris está en Francia (Paris is in France)
  • Russian has no verb for being in the present tense. It is left out - sometimes indicated by a ' - '
  • Danish and Swedish do not conjugate verbs as you will notice from the charts.. They are included as a convenience.
